Togo’s Council President Faure Gnassingbé proposed three key priorities for enhancing cooperation between Russia and African nations during the opening session of the third Russia-Africa Summit at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The priorities focus on sovereignty, peace and stability, and economic transformation.
Gnassingbé highlighted the importance of a partnership rooted in respect for sovereignty, emphasizing that African countries should have the autonomy to determine their own priorities, select international partners, and secure the necessary resources for their development. He called for increased African representation in international decision-making processes that impact the continent’s future.
“Sovereignty takes on its full meaning when it enables a people to determine their own path and secure the means to pursue it,” he stated. The Togolese leader urged for cooperation based on mutual respect and trust amongst nations.
Addressing the second pillar, Gnassingbé identified peace and stability as essential for the continent’s advancement. He underscored the detrimental effects of ongoing conflicts on local populations and economic activities, particularly the limited job opportunities for the youth. He called for enhanced national capacities to ensure civilian protection and security, as well as support for African-led efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts.
In terms of economic transformation, Gnassingbé urged for collaborative efforts that address immediate needs related to food security, energy, and employment. “Our people legitimately expect tangible results: affordable food, reliable energy, jobs and opportunities for their children,” he noted. He identified agriculture, energy, and infrastructure as priority sectors for fostering economic growth and advocated for improved local production capabilities, better processing of raw materials, and enhanced trade connectivity.
Through these three strategic priorities, Gnassingbé aims to reshape the Russia-Africa partnership to yield significant benefits for both regions, focusing on national sovereignty, regional stability, and economic development.
