The Detroit Lions have signed linebacker K.J. Britt from the New England Patriots’ practice squad to bolster their roster following a series of injuries. This announcement was made by Lions general manager Brad Holmes on Monday.
The signing comes on the heels of the Lions’ recent 19-15 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, a game that resulted in significant injuries within the linebacker corps. Rookie Jimmy Rolder has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, and the status of All-Pro Jack Campbell remains uncertain as he continues to recover in a hospital.
Lions Secure Veteran Linebacker
Britt, 27, is an experienced NFL player who was drafted in the fifth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has spent four seasons with Tampa Bay and played for the Miami Dolphins in 2025. Most recently, he was on the Patriots’ practice squad.
Throughout his career, Britt has played in 77 regular-season games, including 16 starts, and has recorded a total of 134 tackles. He made 11 starts for the Buccaneers in 2024 and participated in all 17 games with the Dolphins last season, adding valuable NFL experience to the Lions’ lineup. Additionally, Britt has been a significant contributor on special teams, which could enhance his utility for Detroit.
His previous connection with the Lions’ defensive line coach, Kacy Rodgers, formed during their time together in Tampa Bay, might facilitate Britt’s transition to the team.
Prior to Britt’s addition, head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the need for reinforcement, stating, “We may need a little bit of help. We’re looking at everything. We’ll adjust as we go.” Campbell indicated discussions with Holmes regarding potential roster changes were already underway.
Rolder’s injury has left a gap in the Lions’ defense, and Campbell remains hopeful for Campbell’s recovery, although no specific medical updates have been provided on his condition.
Britt’s Potential Role in Detroit
Britt is not seen as a direct replacement for Jack Campbell but rather as an experienced option for defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. Other linebackers on the roster include Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, Trevor Nowaske, Amen Ogbongbemiga, and Joe Bachie, all of whom are available to fill linebacker roles.
Whether Britt will assume an immediate defensive role has yet to be determined, as the Lions have not announced any corresponding roster moves. However, his experience against the run and contributions on special teams could be beneficial as Detroit adjusts its defensive strategy.
The Lions will continue to monitor the health of their players as the season progresses, and Britt’s signing reflects a proactive approach to addressing the team’s needs.
