In a stunning upset, East Texas A&M defeated Oklahoma 68-64 in the season opener on Monday night, marking the Lions’ first victory over a power-conference opponent. Entering the game as 28.5-point underdogs, the Lions accomplished one of the biggest upsets in recent NCAA history, according to ESPN Research.
The win is particularly significant for East Texas A&M, coming in only their fifth season at the Division I level. The team held control for much of the game, leading 34-25 at halftime and even extending their advantage to 16 points early in the second half.
Key Moments in the Game
Despite Oklahoma’s efforts to rally, tying the score at 60, East Texas A&M responded decisively. Bo Aldridge scored to regain the lead with 2:33 remaining, followed by Mohamed Diakite, who added a pair of free throws and a dunk, increasing the Lions’ lead to six points. Although Oklahoma narrowed the gap to 66-64, Aldridge secured the win with two final free throws.
Aldridge led all scorers with 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while contributing five assists and hitting three three-pointers. Alonzo Dodd supported the effort with 15 points from five three-pointers, and Diakite added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
This victory not only represents East Texas A&M’s first win against a current SEC opponent but also signifies their initial Division I win to kick off a season since making the jump to this level.
Oklahoma’s Struggles
Oklahoma faced difficulties throughout the game, particularly in the first half, where they made just one field goal over the final 6:53 and finished with a shooting percentage of 29.6% before the break. The team’s shortcomings were evident, as they missed two crucial free throws late in the game that could have turned the tide in their favor.
After the game, Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser expressed regret to fans, acknowledging, “The things you do, in a game like this, in basketball, that get you beat, we did.” The Sooners will seek to bounce back in their next game against Mississippi Valley State on Friday.
Meanwhile, East Texas A&M will travel to Rice on Thursday, looking to build on their historic victory.
