The Los Angeles Chargers, currently facing a challenging 0-7 record, are grappling with significant issues, including a struggling offense that has failed to score more than 10 points in their last two games. Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced on Monday that there may be some positive news on the injury front as the team seeks to improve its performance.
Harbaugh indicated that tight end David Njoku is “likely” to have his practice window activated this week, which could mark his return to action. Njoku has been sidelined since Week 2 due to a fibula injury. In the season opener, he recorded five receptions for 58 yards, and his presence could provide a much-needed boost to a depleted offensive lineup.
Njoku, at 6-foot-4, offers a strong receiving option, particularly in crucial situations such as third-and-short or red-zone opportunities. His versatility as a target could help alleviate the Chargers’ offensive struggles. Although his production has dipped in recent seasons, he managed to catch 81 passes for 882 yards and scored six touchdowns in 2023 while playing for the Cleveland Browns, which earned him his first Pro Bowl selection.
The Chargers are also dealing with a lack of proven offensive threats. Wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who has been the most reliable option, has made 17 catches for 286 yards and one touchdown in six games. Meanwhile, Tre’ Harris has recorded 18 receptions for 256 yards but is viewed more as a complementary player.
This season, L.A.’s other tight ends have struggled to make an impact. Oronde Gadsden II has tallied just 155 receiving yards and one touchdown on 17 catches, while Charlie Kolar, leading the depth chart, has heaved in only 98 yards over ten receptions.
As the Chargers prepare for their upcoming matchup, the potential return of Njoku could be a pivotal factor in their efforts to turn around a difficult season and score more effectively on offense.
