Notre Dame’s football team faces a critical season ahead, highlighted by their upcoming matchup against Miami, especially after the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee ranked them No. 11 in its initial standings this week. Despite entering the week with only one loss, the Irish are positioned behind several teams with two losses, raising concerns about their playoff prospects.
The CFP selection process emphasizes the importance of “signature wins,” and this year’s ranking reflects Notre Dame’s struggles. Hunter Yurachek, the CFP chairman, noted the team’s lack of significant victories, pointing out that Notre Dame had lost its only match against a ranked opponent. “They have a great opportunity this weekend against Miami to get that signature win,” Yurachek said.
Notre Dame has become an Independent program, granting them the flexibility to craft their schedule. However, this has not worked in their favor; they have played only two top 25 teams this season. Their strength of schedule currently ranks 54th, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, a position that could jeopardize their chances of reaching the playoff.
The Fighting Irish’s previous season saw them miss the playoffs with a 10-2 record, primarily due to questions surrounding their strength of schedule. The disappointment from last year remains fresh, and if they lose to Miami, it would further diminish their playoff hopes, even if they finish the season with just two losses.
Notre Dame’s lone loss this season came against BYU in Provo, leaving the game against Miami as a crucial opportunity for them to secure a high-quality victory. Furthermore, if Wisconsin, whom Notre Dame defeated earlier this season, manages to finish ranked, it could enhance the Irish’s resume. They also have a scheduled game against SMU later in the season, which may bolster their playoff chances should they win.
Upcoming games are as follows: Notre Dame will play Miami on November 7, Boston College on November 14, and SMU on November 21, wrapping up the regular season against Syracuse on November 28. The Irish will be looking to capitalize on these opportunities to turn their playoff aspirations into reality.
