Maddalena Boschetti, a fidei donum missionary serving in Haiti since 2002, has spoken about the ongoing violence in the country, characterized by rampant gang activities that have severely impacted daily life for residents. Boschetti asserts that despite the overwhelming challenges, her presence in Haiti serves as a critical response to the pervasive violence and despair. She highlighted the profound difficulties faced by the local population, noting that essential activities like traveling, working, praying, and obtaining food have become increasingly treacherous.
Recent Violence in Haiti
The situation was thrust into the international spotlight following a violent attack in the Kenscoff area, situated in the hills near Port-au-Prince, which occurred between August 23 and 24. The assault reportedly resulted in the deaths of 47 individuals, with 22 others injured and over 50 kidnapped. Many of the victims included children and women, with armed assailants targeting homes and even individuals seeking refuge in places of worship.
Pope Leo XIV expressed his concern over the violence in Haiti during an Angelus prayer at Castel Gandolfo, calling for prayers for the victims and urging the immediate release of hostages. He also appealed to those responsible for the violence to work toward ensuring the safety of the public.
Boschetti described the Kenscoff attack as indicative of a larger pattern of violence that plagues the country, cautioning that such incidents are not isolated but part of a continuous cycle of brutality, including kidnappings and sexual violence. According to recent United Nations reports, over 1,400 individuals were killed and approximately 656 injured between April and June of 2026 as a result of the ongoing violence, with the number of internally displaced persons exceeding 1.4 million.
The Challenge of Security
Gangs maintain control over significant portions of Port-au-Prince, extending their influence into other regions, complicating security efforts. While some areas have seen temporary gains from security operations, armed groups continue to exert pressure, and the missionary stated that many neighborhoods are still under threat. Traveling within the country has become perilous due to gang checkpoints that impose tolls and scrutinize travelers’ documents.
The instability has cast doubt over any plans for future elections, as the transitional government struggles to provide security. Community trust appears to be waning, with citizens expressing a desire for change but lacking the confidence to pursue it amid ongoing violence.
A Mission of Hope
Despite the dire circumstances, Boschetti maintains that the presence of missionaries is crucial. According to her, remaining in Haiti in the face of adversity sends a powerful message of solidarity to the local population, who yearn for security and normalcy. She emphasized that violence should not deter the commitment of those serving in the country; instead, it reinforces the need for their presence among those in need.
Why It Matters
The ongoing crisis in Haiti highlights the severe humanitarian challenges facing the population due to violence and instability. The responses from missionaries like Boschetti underscore a dedication to providing support and hope in desperate times, reflecting a complex struggle for security, peace, and community resilience amidst ongoing turmoil.
