Crystal Palace is reportedly set to finalize the signing of defender Honest Ahanor on a loan deal from Atalanta. The loan agreement is part of a larger £40 million (€46 million) transfer arrangement with Chelsea, where Ahanor is expected to join the London club on a permanent basis next summer.
Ahanor, an 18-year-old talent, made a significant impact at Atalanta last season, featuring in a total of 35 matches across all competitions, including nine appearances in the UEFA Champions League. He joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer after making six appearances for the Serie A side.
The move comes as Crystal Palace faces challenges in its defensive lineup. Earlier in the season, they lost Chadi Riad to an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a match against Everton, leaving the squad with only three senior centre-backs. The current options include Chris Richards, new signing Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Jaydee Canvot. Additionally, Palace attempted to secure the services of Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge, but the deal has encountered complications due to concerns regarding Ordonez’s pre-existing injury.
In response to these setbacks, Palace signed Chelsea’s Axel Disasi on loan last week, bolstering their defensive options. Ahanor’s arrival will further enhance the squad, providing depth in the center-back position, which manager Pierre Sage indicated was a priority.
Why It Matters
The addition of Ahanor is seen as crucial for Crystal Palace as they strive to address their defensive limitations this season. With the team’s recent injury woes and the need for strategic acquisitions amidst UEFA’s financial regulations, signing young, talented players like Ahanor can help forge a path toward a stronger future, especially with his experience on an international level through two caps with Italy. As he gains experience in the Premier League, Ahanor may be well-positioned to contribute effectively to Palace’s ambitions and to Chelsea’s plans in the long term.
