In the Dominican Republic, patients often find themselves facing significant price disparities for medications containing the same active ingredients. Despite having identical health conditions and prescriptions, costs can vary widely based on the pharmacy and brand. For instance, paracetamol prices can range from nine to 19 pesos per unit, illustrating the extent of these discrepancies.
The Constitution of the Dominican Republic permits freedom of enterprise and competition, enabling pharmacies to set their own pricing. Consequently, these variations do not violate any legal standards, though they do pose financial challenges for many patients who may have to spend a larger portion of their income on medications.
In practical terms, paracetamol, commonly used as a pain reliever or fever reducer, is priced differently among pharmacies. A 750-milligram Calox unit is available for approximately 9.04 pesos, while the same dosage from Ibero Fármacos is sold for 12 pesos. MK Laboratories’ version of the same medication is priced at 19.65 pesos.
Similar pricing variations exist for other medications. For instance, a 500-milligram tablet of mefenamic acid, an anti-inflammatory drug, starts at 20.75 pesos from MK Laboratories, while the cost for the Colin brand can reach 47.15 pesos.
Price differences are also evident among antibiotics and other common medications. Amoxicillin, sold as a 500-milligram tablet, has prices that begin at 6.06 pesos for Caplin and extend to 17.47 pesos for LAM, across various brands. Meanwhile, omeprazole, prescribed to reduce gastric acid, shows prices ranging from 4.80 pesos for the Caplin brand to 13.32 pesos for Ibero Fármacos.
In the allergy medication market, cetirizine prices begin at 12.80 pesos for a 10-milligram generic version by Ibero Fármacos and can go up to 18.36 pesos for Feltrex. Notably, antiparasitic medications such as albendazole also display significant price differences, with costs starting at 19.57 pesos for Colin and going up to 23.40 pesos for Alfa Generics.
These variations create a complex landscape for consumers, making it advisable for patients to compare prices across pharmacies to find the most affordable options for their medications.
