Dominican Republic Approves 80MW Battery Storage System
The Dominican Republic’s power regulatory agency, SIE, has authorized an 80 megawatt (MW) / 160 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) to be installed in San Cristóbal province. This project marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s energy stability and efficiency.
EGE Haina, a leading electricity generator in the country, submitted a formal request for the BESS-Haina project in June. This system will be associated with EGE Haina’s 100MW gas-powered plant located in Bajos de Haina, near the capital, Santo Domingo. The new storage system is designed to provide essential primary and secondary frequency regulation services aimed at bolstering the stability of the national interconnected grid.
Under the current regulatory framework, EGE Haina must secure final approval to begin commissioning the project within the next 10 months. This initiative will benefit from the Dominican Republic’s renewable energy incentives law, which offers certain tax advantages to promote the development of clean energy solutions.
EGE Haina has been acknowledged as one of the 39 qualified bidders in the state transmission company’s recent battery storage call and was a winner in the country’s renewable generation auction. The involvement and commitment of EGE Haina are expected to play a crucial role in advancing the country’s renewable energy strategy.
The implementation of this battery storage system is anticipated to enhance the capacity of the national grid and support the integration of more renewable energy sources. As the Dominican Republic increasingly invests in sustainable energy solutions, projects like this are integral to future energy resilience and environmental sustainability.
Why It Matters
The approval of the 80MW battery storage project represents a progressive move towards improving energy security and reliability in the Dominican Republic. This initiative aligns with global trends towards renewable energy and sustainability, indicating a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy independence in the region.
