European Commission Allocates Over €390 Million for Environmental Projects
Funding supports initiatives in nature, circular economy, climate change, and clean energy across Europe.
The European Commission has announced the selection of 135 new environmental and climate projects that will collectively receive more than €390 million through the LIFE program. This funding represents over half of the total investment needed for these projects, which amounts to approximately €579 million.
The remaining funds will be sourced from various stakeholders, including businesses, civil society organizations, project partners, and different levels of government, including local, regional, and national entities.
Out of the selected projects, 29 focus on nature and biodiversity and will receive over €151 million from the EU, contributing to a total investment exceeding €223 million. Additionally, 36 projects aimed at enhancing quality of life and promoting a circular economy will secure nearly €91 million from the EU, out of a total of nearly €163 million set for these initiatives.
For climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, the EU will allocate over €61 million for 26 projects that collectively require more than €102 million. Furthermore, 44 multi-country projects dedicated to the clean energy transition will receive nearly €87 million from the EU, from a total projected investment of over €91 million.
The projects were selected from a pool of 1,095 applications submitted in response to the program’s 2025 calls for proposals, the Commission reported. The funding allocated through the LIFE program has increased by 9% from the previous year.
The current phase of the LIFE program began in 2021 and will continue until 2027, with a total budget of €5.43 billion. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency oversees the distribution of LIFE grants.
