BANGOR, Maine – House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence that Republicans will retain their majority in the U.S. House during the upcoming midterm elections, despite increasing Democratic momentum as Election Day approaches.
Speaking at a campaign event in Maine, Johnson attributed his optimism to the enthusiastic crowds he encounters while campaigning across the country, the quality of GOP candidates, and significant fundraising success, noting that nearly $500 million has been raised for House Republicans.
“We run to win, and that’s biblical: You run to win,” Johnson said. “And I believe that we will.”
The speaker, who is second in the presidential line of succession, has previously joked about starting a lawn care business in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, should Republicans lose power. However, he maintains that the GOP will defy historical trends, which often see the party holding the presidency lose seats in Congress during midterms.
Johnson, who has aligned closely with former President Donald Trump, faces challenges including high inflation and voter dissatisfaction. He governs a narrow House majority, often requiring unity among his party members to pass legislation. Alongside statements of confidence, he hinted that the GOP could secure a “working majority,” although he acknowledged it may not be substantial.
Since becoming speaker after Republicans ousted previous leader Kevin McCarthy in 2023, Johnson has maintained a tight control over the GOP, achieving key legislative goals including tax cuts and social service reforms. Republican Rep. Mark Harris of North Carolina praised Johnson’s ability to deliver results, noting past instances where Johnson defied expectations to secure votes.
In anticipation of the National Election, Johnson is visiting over 20 states and more than 40 congressional districts before November. He spoke about the political landscape, which he feels echoes the momentum of the 2024 elections that led to Republican victories. His campaign strategies include portraying Democratic candidates as extreme and out of touch.
While Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries prepares a legislative agenda for a potentially new Congress in January, Johnson has outlined a focus on continuity, emphasizing plans for less taxation and regulation if Republicans maintain their control.
In his personal life, Johnson emphasized the importance of his faith, stating, “My faith is a huge component of how I think and how I act.” He recently led a public prayer on the National Mall, marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. Johnson expressed gratitude for the prayers he receives, asserting that he prays for divine guidance regarding America’s leadership.
As the midterm elections approach, Johnson’s belief in a Republican victory remains steadfast, grounded in his ideals and the support he feels from his constituents.
