Emily Wöbcke, a strategic planner from Melbourne, has taken a year off work to travel, exploring markets, natural landscapes, and coastlines around the globe. Her recent journey to Morocco, particularly to the Atlas Mountains, turned out to be not just an adventure, but also a way to forge lasting friendships.
Planning the trip of a lifetime
As they approached their 30th birthdays, Darwin residents Hannah Dunn and Georgina Spittle sought a milestone adventure. Hannah noted, “It felt like a good time for a proper adventure and milestone trip.” Morocco was appealing for its exotic culture and cuisine.
The duo wanted to join a group trip with peers who shared their desire for meaningful experiences, rather than typical party-centric travel. “We didn’t want to be significantly younger than everyone else on the tour. We were looking for that middle ground,” Hannah explained.
Intrepid Travel quickly emerged as their choice, thanks to its offerings for budget-conscious, socially aware travelers. The company’s 18-35s trips promise unforgettable experiences in diverse locations, such as Africa and Asia, fostering connections between like-minded individuals.
Finding kindred spirits in Africa
Hannah and Georgina first met Emily at an Intrepid welcome meeting in Morocco. They arrived late after a Moroccan cooking class, only to find themselves welcomed by a group of fellow travelers. “I remember Emily introducing herself and immediately thinking she seemed really bubbly and funny,” Georgina recalled. Daily interactions, shared meals, and long bus rides allowed the group to bond.
Emily felt an immediate connection, citing their similar life stages and senses of humor. The three women quickly became friends while exploring Morocco’s stunning scenery, enjoying local cuisine, and immersing themselves in the culture.
A trip designed to build connection
Central to their experience was Youssef, the Intrepid tour leader. Hannah described him as “a beautiful man,” noting his kindness and generosity. His calm demeanor helped create an inviting atmosphere for sharing unforgettable moments.
Georgina recalled a joyful afternoon in the Atlas Mountains at a picturesque homestay. She said, “We decided to go outside and do some yoga with the mountains as our backdrop,” as local children entertained themselves by watching their attempts at yoga. “We were just sitting around, laughing, reading, stretching and enjoying each other’s company in this beautiful place,” she added.
Lasting friendships
As the trip came to an end, the friendships formed felt profound. The women expected to meet friendly people but were surprised by the depth of their connections. “I think I expected to meet some lovely people, but I definitely didn’t anticipate forming such a deep connection with someone in such a short period of time,” Georgina reflected.
Emily agreed, emphasizing the joy they shared during their travels. Georgina remarked, “It reminded me that making meaningful new friendships doesn’t have to stop as we get older. Sometimes we just need to put ourselves in environments where those friendships have the opportunity to flourish.”
The group left Morocco knowing they would see each other again, highlighting the unexpected but cherished experiences that travel can bring.
