Ellie Giles, a sophomore in the Marine Studies program at Oregon State University, credits the Seymour Marine Discovery Center for igniting her passion for marine science. Giles recalls her first field trip to the center in second grade, where she was captivated by the aquarium and inspired to pursue a career as a marine biologist.
“Without a doubt, the Seymour Center is the reason I’m pursuing marine science today,” said Giles. She noted that the center not only sparked her curiosity but also provided the tools and encouragement necessary to forge her current educational path. Over the years, as her dream has evolved, the Seymour Center has expanded her understanding of how she can make a significant impact in marine education.

Giles is currently enrolled in a unique interdisciplinary Marine Studies program that merges scientific concepts with social perspectives, preparing students for careers that connect people with the ocean. She expressed her excitement about studying marine ecosystems and the human impact on ocean environments, insights she gained during her time at the Seymour Center.
Her ambition is to work in marine science education, aiming to inspire future generations to protect and appreciate the oceans, similar to the influence the Seymour Center had on her. To support such aspirations, she encourages contributions to the Seymour Center, highlighting a goal to raise $150,000 by December 31. These funds will help cultivate the next generation of marine researchers, educators, and conservation leaders.
Jonathan Hicken, Executive Director of the Seymour Center, emphasized the center’s role in shaping young scientists’ journeys. “For more than 25 years, supporters have helped young people see themselves in science,” he said. Hicken believes that meaningful exposure to scientific research and local ecosystems is crucial in catalyzing curiosity and engagement in marine sciences.
The Seymour Center invites community members to participate in this initiative, reinforcing their commitment to fostering a new wave of scientific leaders. Donations can be made online to help reach fundraising goals and continue supporting educational programs and outreach.
