Iris Technology Corporation, based in Irvine, California, has secured a strategic investment from private equity firm OceanSound Partners aimed at bolstering its engineering, manufacturing, and product development capabilities. The financial details of the investment remain undisclosed.
This funding is intended to support Iris Technology’s expansion as demand for specialized electronic components rises, particularly for applications in missile warning, missile tracking, and space-based surveillance systems.
Ed O’Rourke, the founder and CEO of Iris Technology, will maintain a significant ownership stake in the company and continue to lead alongside the existing management team. Established in 1986, Iris produces radiation-hardened electronics vital for national security space missions and has a diverse portfolio that includes cryocooler control electronics and heater control cards used in various sensing applications.
The company’s products are instrumental for national security missions, such as missile detection and tracking, as well as civil and scientific space endeavors. Iris Technology supplies major defense contractors, including BAE Systems, General Atomics, Leidos, Leonardo DRS, and Northrop Grumman. Their electronics have reached Technology Readiness Level 9 (TRL 9), indicating successful operation in relevant environments.
As the U.S. defense sector increasingly focuses on space-based sensing and missile defense systems, Joe Benavides, CEO of OceanSound Partners, highlighted growing opportunities stemming from initiatives like the Golden Dome for America missile defense initiative and advancements in low Earth orbit satellite architectures. He remarked, “Missile warning and missile tracking are the most durable priorities in national security space,” emphasizing the continuous need for qualified, radiation-hardened electronics.
Iris Technology also manufactures rugged power management equipment tailored for military communications, including portable power systems and vehicle-mounted inverters to enhance operational capabilities in field settings. With OceanSound’s support, the company plans to invest further in engineering, testing, supply chain operations, and program management to enhance production capacity and reduce lead times as the demand for space and defense programs expands.
The collaboration will allow Iris Technology to explore new product offerings in adjacent defense and space electronics sectors through both internal development and potential acquisitions, while remaining an independent supplier to various aerospace and defense contractors. O’Rourke stated, “Almost every sensing payload that flies depends on electronics like ours,” underscoring the critical nature of their technology in military operations.
Iris Technology conducts its engineering and testing in-house at its Irvine facility, ensuring that components meet stringent specifications before deployment. This investment positions the company to enhance its production capabilities and customer outreach as national security programs increasingly leverage space-based systems.
OceanSound Partners, which specializes in technology investments within regulated sectors, aims to scale Iris Technology’s operations while preserving its independence as a supplier in aerospace and defense electronics. Legal representation for OceanSound Partners was provided by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, while Kroll Securities LLC served as the financial advisor to Iris Technology and Crowell & Moring LLP as its legal counsel.
