The Kilgore Boys Baseball Association (KBBA) and I-20 Sports are collaborating to revitalize youth sports in East Texas amid concerns about declining participation across the country. Joe Hart, President of KBBA, and Adam Brown, the owner of I-20 Sports, outlined their joint efforts to improve sports facilities and foster a love for baseball among local children during an interview this week.
KBBA utilizes the Whataburger Sports Complex in Kilgore for its games, practices, and tournaments, while I-20 Sports has recently taken over the management of the complex. Brown is currently focused on upgrading the baseball fields and equipment to create a better environment for youth athletes. “I’m thankful for Adam and I-20,” Hart expressed, acknowledging the crucial support provided by I-20 Sports in sustaining local leagues.
The partnership began nearly two years ago when Brown and his business partner, Nick Northern, volunteered to enhance KBBA’s operations. Brown emphasized that their commitment includes providing free practice fields and preparing them without charge for games. He reported that a recent fundraising tournament generated $2,500 for KBBA, involving around 20 teams, and they aim to increase participation in future events.
Brown, who also owns Longview Decks, highlighted his hands-on approach in managing the sports complex, stating, “I enjoy getting out there in the heat and working my tail off with my staff.” As part of their renovation plans, Brown aims to return the complex to its original condition, including plans to turf all batting circles and improve drainage systems in collaboration with the city.
This weekend, Oct. 10-11, KBBA and I-20 Sports are hosting the 3rd Annual Think Pink Tournament to raise awareness for breast cancer. The event is particularly meaningful as it supports Northern’s mother, who is undergoing cancer treatment. Brown noted that this tournament is expected to attract 120 teams and draw 2,000 to 3,000 participants to Kilgore, positively impacting the local economy.
In addition to promoting youth sports, I-20 Sports is committed to philanthropic initiatives, such as partnering with the East Texas Angel Network and Neal McCoy, with previous tournaments having raised nearly $50,000 for the cause. Brown believes in the importance of community engagement through sports, stating, “We want to help the community in every way possible, which is why we do these types of tournaments.”
