Lisandro Martinez, the Manchester United defender, has formally apologized for his recent outburst following the team’s 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. After the match, Martinez criticized the club’s leadership for insufficient summer investments and directly called out technical director Jason Wilcox, stating that he expected more support from the club’s hierarchy.
On Thursday, Martinez met with club executives, including Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, alongside head coach Michael Carrick. The meeting allowed the player to express his concerns and clarify his remarks from after the game.
In a statement issued later that evening, Martinez reflected on the discussions, saying, “It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s game.” He acknowledged his passionate nature and stated, “The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologize.” He added, “Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognize that my words in that moment did not help with that.”
While further disciplinary actions are expected to remain confidential, reports suggest that Martinez may have been fined for his comments. The club has since considered the matter resolved as they prepare for an upcoming match against Leeds United on Sunday.
Initially, Martinez issued a statement on Wednesday following his comments but did not apologize at that time. The quick development of events indicates his decision to publicly express regret was his own, aimed at maintaining team unity.
Despite these tensions, Manchester United’s management will now focus on their upcoming game. Sources indicate that there are no internal pressures on Wilcox regarding his position. Moving forward, the club is also assessing its defensive lineup for potential changes in the next transfer windows.
Martinez’s future at Old Trafford may be uncertain, as he has expressed a desire to leave in the past, both at Ajax and recently, where he sought a move to Atletico Madrid. The club holds the option to extend his contract for another year, but there are doubts about whether this extension will occur.
