U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert for Dominican Republic
The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo has issued a warning for American citizens traveling to the Dominican Republic, highlighting concerns regarding rising crime, particularly incidents involving drugging, robbery, and sexual assault targeting travelers. Reports indicate that such attacks are often facilitated through dating apps or occur at bars and nightclubs, with some incidents taking place in private residences and around hotels.
In light of these developments, the Embassy urges travelers to exercise heightened caution. Recommendations include using online dating apps with care and meeting new acquaintances only in well-populated public areas. It is advisable to avoid secluded locales, including hotels and private homes, as these are where many crimes occur. Furthermore, travelers should be wary of any changes in meeting arrangements suggested by new acquaintances, as this may indicate harmful intent.
For those planning to invite someone they recently met to their accommodation, the Embassy advises prearranging entry protocols with hotel staff, including verifying the visitor’s identification. Travelers should also avoid leaving food or drinks unattended and refrain from accepting items from individuals they do not know well.
It is recommended that individuals inform friends or family about their plans when meeting someone for the first time, including details about the meeting location and the app used to connect. The Embassy notes that victims who are targeted via online platforms often have their electronic devices stolen, which can erase vital evidence.
Tourists are reminded to remain vigilant in crowded locations and stay aware of their surroundings. In case of an emergency, individuals should call 911 or contact the tourist police (POLITUR) at 809-200-3500, which offers English support, or via WhatsApp at 809-754-3096.
In the unfortunate event of a sexual assault, the Embassy recommends reaching out to POLITUR for assistance with medical care and legal actions. For immediate help, travelers can contact the U.S. Embassy directly or reach out to the State Department’s Consular Affairs at 1-888-407-4747 toll-free from the United States and Canada.
For more information on precautions and resources, individuals can visit the U.S. Embassy’s official website or enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates regarding safety in the Dominican Republic.
