The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science has welcomed its sixth cohort for the Watson College Scholars Program for the academic year 2026-27. The program, which began in 2021, aims to support undergraduates who demonstrate strong potential for graduate studies and careers in engineering or computer science.
Support and Sponsorship for Scholars
The initiative provides participants with educational opportunities, mentorship, and financial assistance, facilitating their journey toward academic and professional success. Funding for the program is sourced through donations and industry sponsorships. Key sponsors for this cohort include James and Heather Bankoski, Bloomberg LP, Toyota Material Handling North America, the Avangrid Foundation, and Subhachandra Chandra and Nandita Dukkipati.
This year’s cohort consists of students with diverse backgrounds and aspirations, all sharing a commitment to excelling in their respective fields. During a recent welcome luncheon on September 30, Dean Atul Kelkar addressed new and returning scholars, emphasizing the importance of community and collaboration within the program.
Individual scholars expressed their thoughts on the significance of being named a Watson College Scholar and what they look forward to at Binghamton University. For instance, Alexander ‘Sasha’ Asinovsky from Owego, New York, majoring in electrical engineering, highlighted the confidence boost he gained from joining the program, stating it marks the beginning of a new chapter in his academic career.
Igor Zon DeSouza, a computer science major from Mineola, emphasized the importance of being part of a community that fosters learning and relationship-building. He shared his eagerness to explore academic and social opportunities at Binghamton.
Amir Elhadraoui from Brooklyn, projected to major in mechanical engineering, expressed gratitude for the mentorship opportunities available through the program, viewing it as a platform for personal and professional development. Similarly, Sharon Gao, initially undecided in her major, is enthusiastic about the immersive engineering community she will be joining.
Other scholars, like Yosmely ‘Mely’ Vasquez from The Bronx and Andy Wong from Brooklyn, expressed excitement about connecting with peers and getting involved in hands-on projects and undergraduate research. They see the Watson College Scholars Program as a transformative step in their educational journeys, aiming to leverage the resources and support provided to thrive in their fields.
