Voting concluded on Sunday for Brazilian citizens residing in Asia and Oceania, with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva securing victories in five of the nine countries where votes were cast. The electoral results are part of the ongoing presidential runoff as Brazilians living abroad participate in the electoral process.
Far-right Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the presidential candidate from the Liberal Party (PL), won in the remaining four jurisdictions. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) reported that approximately 918,000 Brazilians are eligible to vote from afar.
In the territories where Lula da Silva is victorious, he received significant support, including 74.83% in Finland, 82.90% in Estonia, and 90.60% in Syria. Other notable results for Lula include 90.51% in Jordan, 78.95% in Egypt, and 64.44% in Kenya. Lula also claimed decisive percentages in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, China, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, among others.
In contrast, Bolsonaro led in countries such as Greece (54.95%), South Africa (57.92%), and Japan (80.08%). He also secured wins in Mozambique, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
By noon on Sunday, voting results revealed that Bolsonaro was ahead in eight countries, while Lula led in six. However, reports indicate that the electoral behavior from 67 additional countries has yet to be included in the official count. Important voting demographics, particularly from Portugal and the United States, remain pending as their polling stations are still open.
In the first round of voting, Lula garnered 157,387 valid votes from abroad, amounting to 47.57% of the total, while Bolsonaro received 143,900 votes, or 43.49%. Given that only about 0.5% of Brazilian electors reside outside the country, the voting results from overseas are not statistically significant for predicting the overall outcome of the runoff.
The counting process continues as the race remains competitive, with further updates expected as more results come in.
