The Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) has been awarded a 2026 Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for its development of the NMOS Discovery, Registration, and Connection specifications. This accolade is shared with Sony Corporation, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), and Streampunk Media, acknowledging their joint efforts in establishing NMOS as a standard control framework in networked media production.
The presentation of the award took place on October 14 during the Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California. Brad Gilmer, AMWA’s executive director, accepted the award on the association’s behalf.
The Emmy recognizes two key foundational Networked Media Open Specifications: IS-04, which pertains to NMOS Discovery and Registration, and IS-05, which involves NMOS Device Connection Management. IS-04 provides a standardized, vendor-neutral method for devices, senders, receivers, and other media resources to be discovered and registered on an IP network. Meanwhile, IS-05 allows controllers to manage connections between compatible senders and receivers.
By integrating discovery and connection management with SMPTE ST 2110 transport protocols, IS-04 and IS-05 create an open framework conducive to multi-vendor IP production. This framework has been bolstered by interoperability testing, automated test suites, open-source implementations, and widespread vendor adoption, contributing to modern media workflows. Developed through AMWA’s Networked Media Incubator, NMOS symbolizes the collaboration of end-users, manufacturers, systems integrators, developers, and industry organizations aiming to address common operational challenges.
“I’m always amazed by how much our industry can accomplish through open collaboration, and I’m delighted to see that collective effort recognized with this Emmy,” said Brad Gilmer. He emphasized that NMOS emerged from the collaboration of end users, manufacturers, integrators, and developers who brought operational needs and engineering expertise together. “We are grateful to the many AMWA members and contributors whose work made IS-04 and IS-05 a practical reality for broadcasters and media organizations around the world. This award belongs to that community, and it encourages us to keep building the open, interoperable foundations our industry will need next,” he added.
This award marks AMWA’s second Technology & Engineering Emmy within two years, following its recognition in 2025 for the standardization of SMPTE ST 2067, the Interoperable Master Format.
