Attorneys in both New York City and the Dominican Republic are gaining a unique resource through the legal practice of Alexis Colón. Colón, a former Dominican diplomat, serves as the founder and managing partner of Colón and Partners, a multijurisdictional law firm offering services in business, real estate, probate, taxation, and intellectual property law, along with civil and commercial litigation.
In addition to his legal practice, Colón co-chairs the New York City Bar Association’s Inter-American Affairs Committee, where he advocates for increased international collaboration among legal professionals across the Americas. Colón emphasizes the importance of investment in improving legal practice beyond mere client acquisition.
“If we want to improve the practice of law, if we want to have a better practice, if we want to have better attorneys, then we have to devote our time to that,” he stated.
Since assuming his leadership role with the committee, Colón has been instrumental in organizing cultural exchange events that involve approximately a dozen countries. He aims to expand these initiatives to cover 60% to 70% of nations in North and South America, focusing on those with significant economies.
Colón believes these exchanges foster connections between attorneys practicing in similar fields across different countries and position the City Bar as a central hub for legal collaboration. He pointed out, “Cultural connection helps fulfill the mission of the City Bar by bringing attorneys from all over the region to discuss how things are similar and different in their countries.”
He foresees the potential for impactful publications, such as a comparative law paper that outlines the differences and similarities among tax, property, and business laws across the Americas, contributing significantly to international legal understanding.
Colón’s extensive background as a diplomat, where he facilitated trade agreements with various nations, has given him valuable experience that informs his current legal practice. “My diplomatic career gave me a base of experience in a truly international sphere,” he said, noting that the skills acquired during that time are essential in his law practice today.
For many clients, having an attorney familiar with both the U.S. and Dominican legal systems is crucial. Colón addresses needs related to property inheritance and business growth across borders—common concerns for individuals with ties in both regions.
“We represent clients in inheritance or probate processes,” he explained, referring to the complex legal issues that arise when families straddle both countries, often needing assistance with property and legal matters following a death.
Colón is also focused on helping clients navigate corporate transactions and compliance with investment laws in the Dominican Republic. He has ambitions to expand his firm, which he opened in 2019, by hiring about ten new staff members across his offices in New York City and the Dominican Republic, further strengthening his commitment to bridging legal practices between the two locales.
