The Dominican Republic’s tourism board has emphasized the significance of the travel trade to its growth strategy, noting that 74% of visitors from the UK opt for package holidays. Jennifer Elias, the international marketing director at the Dominican Republic’s ministry of tourism, stated that the UK is the largest source market for the destination in Europe, with nearly 160,000 arrivals recorded between January and September 2026.
Elias pointed out enhancements in connectivity and service, including increased flight capacity and new cruise itineraries, as vital opportunities for travel agents. “British Airways is increasing their service with an additional four weekly flights, which will bring more people to the island,” she said.
During the same period, the Dominican Republic welcomed 2.1 million cruise passengers, with the MSC Opera set to begin year-round homeporting from La Romana starting November 16, a development anticipated to attract around 120,000 passengers annually.
Luxury tourism is also a focus, with plans for over 5,000 new hotel rooms to be added by 2027. Notable developments include a new Four Seasons property in Miches and the upcoming Angsana Cap Cana, which is expected to open in January 2027.
The tourism board is launching enhancements to its DO Travel Rewards platform for agents next year, featuring additional webinars, familiarization trips, and a new points redemption system. This initiative will allow agents to trade points for gifts, gift cards, and travel experiences.
Elias urged agents to consider promoting the Dominican Republic to a broader audience, moving beyond traditional beach holiday offerings. “We’re trying to diversify, and there are different tour operators catering to different demographics,” she mentioned. She highlighted a new walking package from Ramble Worldwide, which features a 10-night “Discover the Dominican Republic” itinerary.
