Players from the Empire Strykers indoor soccer team received comprehensive sports physicals at Loma Linda University Health on October 30, 2023, as part of a program to ensure their readiness for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
Each athlete underwent an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram, along with individual consultations with physicians to check their vital signs. Among the medical professionals present was Dr. Francis Chan, an expert in internal medicine and general pediatrics.
Following the evaluations, physicians reviewed the players’ screening results and issued medical clearances as needed, emphasizing the importance of health and wellness for the athletes. Jeff Burum, managing partner of the Empire Strykers and president of the Major Arena Soccer League, underscored the team’s commitment to player health beyond the field.
“At the Empire Strykers, we believe our responsibility to our players goes far beyond what happens on the field,” Burum said. He highlighted that comprehensive physicals are crucial not just for season preparation, but also for prevention and early detection of health issues. “We owe them the same commitment when it comes to protecting their health, wellness, and long-term quality of life,” he added.
This event also allowed Loma Linda University Health to bolster its support for local athletes and strengthen ties with the Inland Empire community. Burum noted the significance of the partnership with LLUH, emphasizing its impact beyond soccer.
“It brings together world-class healthcare and professional sports with a shared commitment to healthier athletes, healthier families, and a healthier community,” he stated. “We’re incredibly proud of this relationship and grateful to have a partner that shares our belief that investing in people is the most important investment we can make.”
