Harry Kane has been awarded the Ballon d’Or for 2026, marking the first time in 25 years an English player has received the prestigious honor. The ceremony took place in London, where Kane’s outstanding performance, highlighted by 73 goals for club and country, earned him this recognition from France Football.
The last English player to win the Ballon d’Or was Michael Owen in 2001. Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich, now joins the ranks of other English football legends like Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, and Kevin Keegan as a recipient of this accolade.
In a twist before the ceremony, the Ballon d’Or website mistakenly published articles announcing three different winners: Kane, Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid, and Lamine Yamal from Barcelona. This caused some confusion before Kane was officially recognized as the winner.
During his acceptance speech, Kane expressed his gratitude, saying, “Wow, I’m almost speechless. First of all, thanks again to France Football and the Ballon d’Or for this amazing event. Being in London, it is extra special; it felt like a good omen.”
Kane emphasized the importance of his journey in football, stating, “For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible. I hope my journey can give you inspiration.” He also thanked his teammates both at Bayern and with the England national team for their support, highlighting the collaborative nature of his success.
England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel congratulated Kane, stating, “Congratulations Harry on a deserved Ballon d’Or! To become the first Englishman to win this huge honour in 25 years makes it extra special.” Prince William also offered his congratulations, praising Kane as a remarkable player and captain.
In the 2026 rankings, Kane topped the list, followed by Mbappe in second place and Yamal in third. The full top rankings included notable names such as Rodri, Lionel Messi, and Jude Bellingham.
As Kane celebrates this monumental achievement, he stands not only as a symbol of personal success but as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring footballers across the globe. The recognition will continue to elevate his profile and contribute to England’s football legacy.
