Kagiso Rabada is set to make his return to international cricket as he faces Australia in the second Test at St George’s Park, following recovery from a hamstring injury. This will be Rabada’s first match since May, arriving at a crucial moment for South Africa, who are looking to bounce back after losing the first Test by 214 runs in Durban.
The match holds significance not just for the series, but also for Rabada personally, as it is the same venue where he faced a two-Test ban in 2018 for colliding with Australia’s Steve Smith during an on-field celebration. Subsequently, this ban was reduced to a fine after an appeal, a decision that left the Australian team dissatisfied, particularly since Smith was unable to present evidence during the hearing.
Since that incident, Rabada has competed against Australia 23 times across all formats without incident, maintaining professional relationships with several Australian players in franchise leagues as well. Ahead of his return, the 31-year-old confirmed he harbors no resentment toward Smith, stating, “That is just the emotion of the game. It’s about playing within the rules.”
Rabada emphasized that competitive emotions can run high on the field, but insists there is respect between players off the field. “There’s no hate off the field or anything like that. It’s a bunch of top-performing athletes who’ve got testosterone to burn. It’s the heat of the moment,” he said, acknowledging the balance between expressing emotions and adhering to the sport’s regulations.
In their previous encounter in 2018 at St George’s Park, Rabada took 11 wickets in the match, cementing his status as man of the series. He holds an impressive record against Australia this century, with 58 wickets at an average of 21.39, second only to India’s Jasprit Bumrah.
South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, has expressed confidence in Rabada’s impact on the team’s morale. “He leads the attack in everything that he does,” Bavuma said. “There’s a lot of belief in KG, and a lot of the guys rub off there. He’s raring to go.”
The final team composition for South Africa is still pending as they wait for updates regarding expected rain on the opening day. Two players, Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne, are set to be dropped, with Marques Ackerman and Matthew Breetzke likely to join the playing XI.
