GQEBERHA, South Africa — Rain impacted the opening day of the second cricket test match between South Africa and Australia on Sunday, causing a delayed start and early lunch after just 5.3 overs of play. South Africa ended the session at 11 runs without loss.
South Africa’s innings commenced after a nearly two-hour delay due to rain. Aiden Markram contributed 10 runs, while debutant Marques Ackerman remained at the crease with 1 run. Australia won the toss and opted to field first.
In the series, Australia currently leads 1-0, having secured a 214-run victory in the first test held in Durban. South Africa, the reigning world test champions, is looking to rebound, as both teams eye the upcoming 2027 World Test Championship final. Following the Durban defeat, South Africa slipped to third place in the standings, with Australia maintaining its top position and New Zealand in second.
South Africa made several changes to its lineup for this match. Notably, pacer Kagiso Rabada returned to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury. Other changes included wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreyne, batsman Tristan Stubbs, and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj being omitted from the team. Ryan Rickelton was designated as the new wicketkeeper and middle-order batsman, while Matthew Breetzke joined the batting lineup with Ackerman making his test debut.
Australia made one adjustment to its team, bringing in pacer Scott Boland in place of off-spinner Nathan Lyon. The selection strategies from both teams were influenced by weather conditions at St. George’s Park, where overcast skies and moist conditions traditionally favor bowlers. The pitch, featuring grass, is expected to present challenges for batsmen throughout the test match.
As players and officials anticipate potential weather interruptions on the first two days, the focus remains on the pitch conditions and the performances of both teams as the match progresses.
