Shares of SpaceX are facing downward pressure for the third consecutive session as the European Union prepares to expedite the approval process for a new satellite initiative aimed at challenging the company’s dominance. This initiative, known as Project Bromo, involves a coalition of European defense and aerospace companies, including Airbus, Leonardo, and Thales, which are collaborating to create a homegrown satellite competitor.
According to Bloomberg, EU regulators are expecting a formal filing from the Project Bromo coalition soon and may grant expedited approval following a standard review. The project’s goal is to reduce Europe’s reliance on American satellite providers, particularly in the launch sector.
For over a year, discussions have taken place between representatives from the involved companies and EU competition authorities, focusing on compliance with antitrust regulations prior to the formal submission of the proposal. A formal filing is anticipated within the next few weeks, and if all competition terms are met, the European Commission could approve the venture with a standard Phase 1 review.

Project Bromo represents a key venture for the European Union’s revised merger assessment policies. These policies aim to strengthen European industrial firms in the face of competition from major players in the United States and China. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has publicly endorsed the project, positioning it as vital for the EU’s strategic autonomy and its future in the space economy.
However, the initiative has faced challenges from labor organizations and equipment suppliers concerned about potential job losses and diminished market competition. EU Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera clarified that despite political support, Project Bromo will undergo rigorous scrutiny under existing regulatory frameworks. “That doesn’t mean we are not going to apply and to enforce our own regulation,” Ribera stated.
Representatives for the European Commission, Airbus, and Leonardo have refrained from commenting on the pending review, while a spokesperson for Thales has not yet responded to requests for comment.
