Vietnam is poised to surpass Indonesia in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, according to projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This year, Vietnam’s GDP per capita is expected to reach $5,259, representing an increase of 8.9% from the previous year.
This figure nearly doubles Vietnam’s GDP per person from a decade ago and exceeds Indonesia’s projected GDP per capita of $5,153. The growth is viewed as a significant milestone for Vietnam, reflecting its rising economic output and improving standard of living.
With this increase, Vietnam is projected to rank fifth among the countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), trailing behind Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand. The economic landscape in the region could see further shifts as these figures develop.
As Vietnam’s economy grows, analysts may look to Thailand to see if it will maintain its position or face challenges that could impact its GDP per capita in the future.
