U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet with Ukrainian representatives in Miami on Friday to discuss proposals aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as reported by an American source familiar with the talks.
This meeting follows comments from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier in the day, who described the war as currently in a “dangerous stalemate.” It coincides with plans by former President Donald Trump to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future.
The purpose of the Miami meeting is to explore new ideas and create a unified proposal for resolving the war, building on discussions American negotiators previously held with both Russian and Ukrainian officials during a recent visit to the region.
Attendees from Ukraine will include Kyrylo Budanov, chief of staff; Rustem Umerov, chief of intelligence; and David Arakhamia, the country’s top negotiator. In addition, representatives from the White House National Security Council and the U.S. Treasury Department will participate.
The U.S. has also invited national security advisors from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as well as officials from NATO and the European Union, to join in the discussions. Key topics are expected to include potential security guarantees for Ukraine and a post-war prosperity plan, among other aspects related to the conflict.
The source indicated that European officials have expressed frustration over high energy costs and other financial burdens resulting from the war. “It will be a tough winter if the war does not stop,” the source added, highlighting the urgency for the U.S. to mediate in creating a unified proposal.
