Sports Technology Recognized as Key Economic Sector in Switzerland
The sports technology sector in Switzerland has been identified as a significant contributor to the national economy, with over 400 companies generating an estimated turnover of CHF 8 billion ($9.6 billion) and providing around 17,000 full-time jobs. This finding is detailed in the Swiss SportsTech Report released on October 23, 2026, which was commissioned by Swiss Olympic in collaboration with consultancy firms PwC and Generis.
The report highlights that the sports technology sector’s economic scale is comparable to that of the biotechnology industry. Companies within this sector are engaged in the development of products, materials, processes, and services tailored for sport, as well as the adaptation of existing technologies to meet the needs of athletes and sports organizations. According to the authors of the study, despite the presence of significant research centers and industrial hubs, the sector remains relatively low-profile.
Among the recommendations made in the report is the establishment of a dedicated national organization for “Sportstech.” This initiative aims to enhance collaboration between the sports community and businesses, boost the visibility of Swiss sports tech companies on an international scale, and facilitate access to new capital for growth.
The forecast for the sector appears optimistic, with 88% of surveyed companies expecting increased turnover in the next two years. Mike Kurt, a co-author of the study, stated that the growth in this sector has the potential to open new markets, accelerate innovation, and bolster international competitiveness in both business and elite sports.
