Gartner unveiled its top ten strategic technology trends for 2027 during the IT Symposium/Xpo held in Orlando this week. The trends address three interconnected challenges for technology leaders: enhancing artificial intelligence beyond textual capabilities, managing autonomous systems, and creating adaptable technology environments.
These trends are categorized into three themes: “leverage the nontextual AI frontier,” “govern the autonomous agent platform,” and “architect durable agility.” According to Gartner, the evolving landscape of enterprise AI will increasingly focus on the information, control, and infrastructure that support these models.
Leverage the Nontextual AI Frontier
The first theme investigates how AI can facilitate numerical analysis, spoken interactions, and insights into physical environments. These enhancements could expand AI’s applicability in forecasting, customer service, and simulation tasks.
Large Quantitative Models
Gartner describes large quantitative models (LQMs) as essential for analyzing numerical data. They will be particularly useful for financial risk assessment, supply chain planning, and energy forecasting. Gartner predicts that by 2030, LQMs will undertake more than 25% of strategic forecasting and operational modeling previously handled by large language models.
Speech Reasoning Models
These models aim to improve voice interactions by interpreting audio and maintaining contextual awareness throughout conversations. Gartner forecasts that by 2030, speech reasoning models will independently manage over 70% of enterprise voice interactions.
World Models
World models are designed to learn representations of both physical and virtual environments, enabling systems to explore potential outcomes before executing actions. In areas such as robotics, this capability could help predict how various actions affect surroundings, thereby improving decision-making processes.
Govern the Autonomous Agent Platform
As AI systems assume greater responsibilities, organizations will need methods to provide context, verify outputs, and control system access. The second theme focuses on creating a manageable autonomy framework.
AI Context Platforms
AI context platforms consolidate essential background information that agents require to interpret requests and act aligned with business objectives. Gartner states that prioritizing semantics in AI-ready data could enhance AI accuracy by up to 80% and reduce operational costs by 60%.
AI Coding Agent Harness
This mechanism connects development tools with enterprise context and verification processes as coding agents engage in more software development. The focus will shift to ensuring that produced changes meet quality, security, and maintainability standards.
AI Agent Identity
AI agent identity is crucial for establishing trust and accountability in software acting on behalf of users. Gartner predicts that by 2028, abuses of AI agents will account for 25% of enterprise security breaches, emphasizing the need for strict access controls.
Autonomous Exposure Remediation
This approach employs AI and automation to identify and address security vulnerabilities. By connecting detection with corrective measures, organizations face the challenge of speeding up remediation while maintaining safeguards to identify and reverse unsuccessful changes.
Architect Durable Agility
The final theme addresses how organizations can ensure flexibility amidst geopolitical shifts, evolving technology dependencies, and infrastructure limitations. The goal is to integrate adaptability into technology design.
SovereignTech
SovereignTech focuses on reducing reliance on critical technology providers by developing architectures that ensure realistic alternatives. Gartner expects that by 2030, over 75% of organizations outside the United States will adopt digital sovereignty strategies.
Disposable Applications
Designed for specific purposes, disposable applications are discarded once their objectives are met. As AI simplifies software creation, organizations are encouraged to rethink the need for every application to be a long-term asset, emphasizing the importance of planning for efficient replacement and retirement processes.
Wetware as a Service
This emerging concept considers the potential for accessing biological computing through a service model, evaluating whether living or synthetic biological systems could achieve specialized computation with reduced energy demands. Its enterprise relevance is contingent on the further development of the technology and the demonstration of its reliability.
Gartner’s insights point to an evolving future where organizations must adapt to technological advancements and changes in operational landscapes. The IT Symposium/Xpo continues to be a platform for these discussions.
