The Indianapolis Colts have traded eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, marking a significant shift for the team following their recent decision to part ways with longtime general manager Chris Ballard. The trade was announced on Tuesday, one day after the Colts fell to a 2-5 record after a loss.
As the Colts navigate the aftermath of these developments, speculation surrounds potential further trades. Veteran defensive lineman DeForest Buckner has emerged as a candidate for trade, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. In an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Schefter noted that while there is interest in Buckner, the team currently does not plan to trade star running back Jonathan Taylor. “They don’t want to trade Jonathan Taylor,” Schefter stated, adding, “but I don’t think they want to. And today I would say they don’t.”
Schefter indicated that other players, including Buckner, Josh Downs, and Grover Stewart, may receive trade inquiries. Buckner’s situation is particularly notable as he is on an expiring contract and has 10 years of experience in the league. This complicates the Colts’ decision, as the potential return for Buckner could be less than that received for Nelson, with a compensatory draft pick estimated at a fifth-round selection if he signs elsewhere after the season.
This trade marks a significant moment for the Colts, reflecting a shift in their roster strategy as they evaluate their performance this season. The team is expected to continue considering its options as the trade deadline approaches, leaving fans and analysts looking forward to possible further changes in the lineup.
