A homeless man in Johannesburg, Thabo Malangu, has entered a rehabilitation program following multiple complaints from local drivers about his behavior at traffic lights in the Fourways area. Malangu expressed remorse for his actions and stated he is working on his recovery.
Drivers’ Complaints
Samantha Wright, an esports broadcast host and content creator known as Tech Girl, reported a troubling encounter with Malangu at the intersection of Witkoppen Road and Main Road. She claimed Malangu stood in front of her vehicle, struck it, and spat in her direction. After this incident, Wright reached out to the local councillor and the Lonehill Residents Association, which led her to contact the Douglasdale police.
Wright also shared her experience in a social media video, prompting others, including women, to report similar encounters with Malangu. Following the publicity, he was arrested, but the case against him was dismissed in court due to insufficient evidence, resulting in his release.
Addiction Treatment
Kurt van Heerden, a local activist and pastor with a decade of experience in addiction work, found Malangu and facilitated his admission to the Centre for Transformation in the West Rand. He is entering a rehabilitation program aimed at treating his heroin addiction.
Pastor Nello Sibinda, the CEO of the rehabilitation center, noted that Malangu admitted to his aggressive behavior occurring during withdrawal episodes. Malangu shared his struggles, saying he has been homeless for eight years and expressed his desire to change: “I am glad to be here. I am trying to recover. I am very, very sorry, and I want to stop all this.”
Case manager Lindsay Holland emphasized that overcoming heroin addiction is a challenging process, but Malangu is showing strong determination to complete his treatment. Samantha Wright expressed her support for his journey, hoping he will successfully rebuild his life.
